The Road to Fields of Blood NZGT 2018... Part 1

Well, having registered for the 40k New Zealand Grand Tournament, as mentioned in a previous post I have had to turn my thoughts toward what to take.

I think I may take Space Wolves.

One of the things that got me heading more surely down this path was going back to my old NZGT (and Natcon, Sydney GT etc.) 3rd Ed lists from 2000 to 2004 for some inspiration.

For instance, this was my 2002 Space Wolf NZGT army (2nd or 3rd place I think...?):

So curious, I went and pointed them up for 8th Ed.

Surprisingly, they come in around the same points. Taking some liberties with weapons loadouts but trying to stay relatively true to the original, this is what the above looks like:

++ Battalion Detachment +3CP (Imperium - Space Wolves) [59 PL, 930pts] ++

+ HQ +

Wolf Lord [5 PL, 100pts]: 3. Tenacious Survivor, Combi-melta, Frost sword, Krakenbone Sword, Warlord

Wolf Guard Battle Leader [5 PL, 70pts]: Bolt pistol, Frost axe

+ Troops +

Blood Claws [12 PL, 177pts]
. 10x Blood Claw
. Blood Claw Pack Leader: Power fist
. Blood Claw with Special Weapon: Flamer

Grey Hunters [11 PL, 178pts]: 9x Chainsword, Wolf Standard
. Grey Hunter Pack Leader: Power fist
. 7x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Plasma gun
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Plasma gun

Grey Hunters [11 PL, 178pts]: 9x Chainsword, Wolf Standard
. Grey Hunter Pack Leader: Power fist
. 7x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Plasma gun
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Plasma gun

Grey Hunters [11 PL, 153pts]: 8x Chainsword
. Grey Hunter Pack Leader: Power fist
. 6x Grey Hunter w/Bolt Pistol
. Grey Hunter w/Plasma Pistol: Plasma pistol
. Grey Hunter with Special Weapon: Bolt Pistol, Meltagun

+ Elites +

Wolf Scouts [4 PL, 72pts]
. Wolf Scout: Combat knife
. Wolf Scout: Astartes shotgun
. Wolf Scout: Astartes shotgun
. Wolf Scout Pack Leader: Bolt pistol, Combat knife
. Wolf Scout with Heavy Weapon: Meltagun

+ Dedicated Transport +

Rhino [4 PL, 74pts]: 2x Storm bolter

++ Spearhead Detachment +1CP (Imperium - Space Wolves) [27 PL, 540pts] ++

+ HQ +

Wolf Guard Battle Leader [5 PL, 72pts]: Frost axe, Storm bolter

+ Heavy Support +

Long Fangs [7 PL, 170pts]
. Long Fang: Lascannon
. Long Fang: Lascannon
. Long Fang: Missile launcher
. Long Fang: Missile launcher
. Long Fang Pack Leader: Boltgun and Bolt Pistol, Chainsword

Predator [9 PL, 192pts]: Storm bolter, Twin lascannon
. Two Lascannons: 2x Lascannon

Whirlwind [6 PL, 106pts]: Storm bolter, Whirlwind vengeance launcher

++ Total: [86 PL, 1542pts] ++

So that looks pretty similar, and probably a good base to work off (albeit a lot to paint...)

Any thoughts comments or suggestions for upping this to 1750 would be appreciated.

I imagine the extra 250pts might come down to a unit of Wulfen vs a unit of Thunderwolves (with some tweaking of the units i.e. drop a plasma gun in the Grey Hunters for a Wolf Guard leader with a combi-plasma if I want +1Ld, also maybe drop some Power Fists for Power Axes, that sort of thing... and goodbye combi-melta/meltaguns in general).

Interesting exercise though!

  1. Well, your first mistake was Space Wolves

  2. I would suggest thunder wolves. that 3++ is so good at soaking up fire and distracting from your back line.

    1. But only if you can afford to arm them all with storm shields!

  4. Quad Lascannon Predator dies in the first turn usually. Well, mine always does anyway. I put heavy bolters on the sponsons to make him cheaper and less of a juicy bullet magnet. That still didn't work so now I take 2 lascannon razorbacks.
