Vlka Fenryka... March of the Ancients

I'm still a bit behind on Deathwatch, now I'm blaming work (had to travel), also I'm doing a lot of running at the moment so that takes up a bit of time...

So in order to keep the blog updating, I've taken some proper photos of the first army I painted last year.

I've painted a lot of the Vlka Fenryka since the 2nd ed codex was released. I've sold 4+ 2000pt armies. They were my first love in 40k - I played them pretty much exclusively for about 10 years - and I very much still have a soft spot for them, given the amount of sprue I have in containers in my garage (read: a lot).

The army background has evolved over time, given the ever evolving nature of GW fiction. Currently imagined as a Great Company lost in the warp during a Great Hunt and have reappeared after an indeterminate time and reunited with Fenris (and reinforced with Primaris).

My vision for this particular list was two detachments separated for theme - one of Firstborn and the other Primaris, working/forging in battle together.

The list was:

++ Patrol Detachment ++

+ HQ +
Olvgar Wintersun - Primaris Chaplain/Wolf Priest on Bike
Litany of Faith (Aura), Canticle of Hate (Aura), Aura of Majesty, Chapter Command: Master of Sanctity, Stratagem: Warrior of Legend, The Wulfen Stone, Warlord, Wise Orator

This is the first 2000pt army I have painted using a "sort of" 30k scheme.

This guy is a converted plastic contemptor... that was a bit of a faff to be honest!

I painted both "30k" Dreadnoughts in a darker grey to represent that they don't get out as much as they used to...

Originally built as Veteran Intercessors, until they got bad

Used AoS Dire Wolves for my Cyberwolves, in hindsight I'd prefer to have bionicisised (?) the Fenrisian Wolf models due to size

An Apothecary comes to town

Painting has been a bit slow lately but I HAVE finished a model.

The yet unnamed Mentor Legion Apothecary.

Yes you can trust him with your geneseed.

Yes I know he only has 4 wounds (min 2 failed saves vs guns these days....). But he looks cool and it's another model moved from one ledger to another.

And another 5 down

So I am getting through 5 models every 10ish days... Possibly due to detail and that I'm painting to match old models rather than a quick scheme from scratch as I did for the Mechanicus.

Anyway, onto the models ...

Originally armed with a phase sword... Better a large power sword thanks

Stereotyping... Salamanders like flamers

Again stereotyping... Guardians of the Covenant also known for burning stuff

Check out the scratch-built Infernus Heavy Bolter...

Now this guy is a grump

Shawty

Backpack seems ... heavy

I have noticed that I didn't drybrush the melta or flamer barrels black so will do that tonight.

I think as a treat I'll paint the Apothecary next, then my 5-man squad with Stalker Boltgun and Missile Launcher (an actual squad not a random collection of models!).

The pile of undercoated models decreases but still quite the mountain (and I haven't even looked at reassembling the Land Raider for ages).

Still progress!

Ok so I slowed a bit due to... ahhh... let's blame the kids not going to bed early enough. But here's the next 4 figures completed (including static grass! Also on the models I completed earlier!!).

I also finally found the (one of 3) notebooks that had my painting recipes for Deathwatch in it - well, some of them anyway - so that was a good find.

Kill Team Cassius Biker Jetek Suberei

Stupid amounts of detail. Glad the silly pigeon broke off too because that would have been a faff to transport.

Ultramarines Sergeant Donatus (or just regular dude)

A stealth specialist with a ... rocket attached to his back

Raptors Vanguard Veteran

Mr Carcharadon to you

The chaos raptor chainswords look a lot like sharks teeth ...
